Spiritual Direction

A safe non-judgemental space to be listened to—and heard—while you explore your path toward personal wholeness and deeper intimacy with God

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is a safe non-judgemental space to be listened to—and heard—while you explore your path toward personal wholeness and deeper intimacy with God.

It is a sacred conversation that asks "where is God present and active in my life?"

What happens in Spiritual Direction?

Despite the name, Spiritual Direction is none directive. My role as a Spiritual Director is not to tell you what 'spiritual direction' your life should take. Rather, it is to support and accompany you on your journey to help you discern the path God is inviting you to travel.

As you share your journey, I listen deeply and intently to notice and discern the movements of God in what you say. I draw your attention to these movements and give you the freedom to explore and reflect on them further to see where they may lead.

Along the way we may explore your deepest desires, passions, and the longings that stir you. All of these arise from your deepest and truest self—your union with God—and are signposts that point the way.

As we explore your journey in this way, you will begin to recognise how God is present and active in your life, and how he is gently leading and inviting you into your own particular way of being in the world.

How will Spiritual Direction help me?

Spiritual Direction will help you nurture, deepen, and explore your relationship with—and awareness of—God. It is a regular spiritual practice—like prayer or meditation—that helps you grow spiritually.

There may also be a specific reasons you want Spiritual Direction; for example:

  • You want ongoing Spiritual Direction to keep your life oriented toward God.
  • You want to reorientate your life toward God after loosing your way in the busyness of life.
  • God has become more real and alive to you and you want to nurture this new relationship.
  • You're going through difficulties and want help with the question "Where is God in all this?"
  • Your prayer life feels stale or dry, and you want to explore the cause, or look at new ways of praying.
  • God may seem absent and you're having difficulty discerning his presence in your life.
  • You need to make an important decision and need help to discern the right path.
  • You want to discern your vocation.
  • You want a Spiritual Director to take you through short retreats in daily life, periods of guided prayer, or the Spiritual Exercise.
  • You want to talk to someone who will listen to your spiritual experiences seriously without judgement.
  • You want to explore a spiritual experience you don’t understand in a safe nonjudgemental space.
  • You may be wrestling with questions about your faith or tradition.
  • To explore and express your beliefs without the fear of your faith community judging or rejecting you.
  • When your beliefs are changing and you want support to discern what to keep or discard.
  • If you no longer attend a formal faith community but still want to grow spiritually.
Meeting for Spiritual Direction
Our meetings

Our meetings last an hour and are confidential. I hold your beliefs, faith, tradition, values, culture, and lifestyle choices with reverence.

I am a member of Spiritual Directors International and follow their guidelines for ethical conduct.

Where and when

We can meet in person at my home in Nottingham, or online via Skype (or similar).

For ongoing Spiritual Direction, we usually meet every 4-6 weeks. If you would like to do a program such as the Spiritual Exercise, short retreats in daily life, or periods of guided prayer, then our meetings may be more often. We can discuss how frequently you wish to meet at our initial meeting.

Get in touch

It would be a privilege to accompany you on your spiritual journey, and I'd love to hear from you to arrange our initial meeting. It's free of charge[1] with no obligation to meet again. It is an opportunity for you to meet me, tell me what you’re looking for in Spiritual Direction, and see if working with me is right for you.

[1] I have a model that should help me to help you with future meetings. Read about it here.
